Primary roadway accounts for approximately 20 per cent of the total public road mileage in Rappahannock, according to the comprehensive plan. Routes 211, 522 and 231 are considered primary highways. The county has 220 miles of secondary roads with 78 per cent paved with hard surface.
The highest volume of traffic in Rappahannock falls on Route 211-522 from Massies Comer to Business Route 211 east of Washington with an average of 4,330 vehicles per day.
On primary roadways, only Route 522 from Route 231 south of Sperryville to Route 707 at Boston has shown a decrease in traffic volume between 1974 and 1978.
Over 50 per cent of the county’s secondary roads carry light traffic, defined as fewer than 76 vehicles per day.
