should be kept free of weeds and sod growth for at least 5 years. Also, shaping and pruning is necessary to encourage the trees to develop straight stems.
Young trees (2 to 3 years old) that fail to develop a single main leader can be encouraged to “straighten up” by pulling in 2 or more branches with strapping tape. A strong, long-lasting tape, such as 3M brand strapping tape, is required. After taping, allow growth for a year or more, gradually pruning off the weaker branches to favor the one that appears to be dominant.
A light pruning should be carried out every year until the trees develop at least 9 feet of straight stem. There are 3 basic rules to keep in mind when pruning:
