And while these original subdivisions were being surveyed by beloved George to become boundaries of the very first Washington, as well as the honored Sperryville and the golden mount of Flint Hill, our spot in question was just an area left to whistle Dixie.
Even though this respected community continued to grow and grow it just remained a place. People became virtuous or needy of virtue and in 1886 a church was built, called Chestnut Grove Church. But the beautiful American chestnut trees died so the church then became the Forest Grove Church. (Information furnished by Mrs. Bertha Cook, to be 94 years old in January ).
Replacing the trading post was Spillman’s General Store. The Viewtown United States Post Office was in full bloom in 1918 when Jesse J. Barron, T. C’s daddy, purchased the store on Rt. 642.
The war was over, hair cuts were given on the front porch Saturday evening and the mounting traffic on Rt. 642 from Amissville continued to i escalate.
In spite of all this well defined activity it was status quo until early this year. Strangers and visitors continued to be met at the border and special guides ushered them to their Viewtown destination.
But the clouds have broken and the smile of success is beaming upon this scenic hamlet. The persistant search for conclusive data and facts
| by the Ruritans has paid off. Their contacts with the Department of Highways at a district and state level has been rewarded.
A recent letter to the Ruritan Club from J. P. Mills, Jr., State Traffic and Safety Engineer states, “I am pleased to advise, the Map Committee acted favorably on this request and Viewtown and Secondary Route 642 will be included on the 1980 Official State Highway Map".
As Gabriel Heater used to say when the fortunes of war changed for the better “There’s good news tonight”, and its victory for Viewtown.
