Many children were born with or may acquire physical and-or mental conditions which can handicap normal growth and development. Fortunately, many of these conditions can be helped if parents recognize the problem early and seek help that is available through the Rappahannock Public School System.
Children between the ages of two and five are eligible for free home bound instruction from Patricia Hottinger, the county’s Child Development Specialist.
Mrs. Hottinger has drawn up a checklist of skills that normal children should have mastered by a specific age. Between birth and one year, most children will babble and coo, reach for objects, turn to voices, pull to standing position, drink from a held cup and pick up a spoon. Between one and two years of age, most children' will be able to walk unassisted, name three body parts, stack a block tower, say about 20 words and indicate need to go to the toilet.
Between two and three years, most children will * recognize people in photographs, jump in place, tell full name, copy a circle, i use short sentences and turn pages in a book. Between i three and four years, most children will be able to name three colors, balance on one foot briefly, snip with ! scissors, listen to a short story and put away toys. Between
