black walnut seedlings are available from Virginia Division of Forestry ntirserie^ for spring planting. Seedlings should be left in a cool place and planted as soon as possible after delivery. You will need about 360 trees per acre.
Plant the seedlings carefully on a spacing of 11 by 11 feet. Seedlings should be planted deep; be sure to fill in the bottom of the holes thoroughly, leaving no air spaces. Soil should be firmly pressed down.
Whether your planting stock comes from wild seeds or nursery seedlings, bear in mind that these trees are not bred for nut production purposes. If you want a nut orchard, order an appropriate variety from a private nursery.
