Spring is the best time to transplant seedlings for timber production purposes. Virginia Division of Forestry nurseries will not have seedlings available until February or March. However, anyone interested in a planting project should request seedlings and-or planting site examination as soon as possible. Seedlings were in great demand last year, and we had shortages of white pines, black walnuts, yellow poplars, and some Christmas tree species.
There is increasing interest among county landowners in planting black walnuts for timber. A stand of black walnuts can be potentially valuable as lumber and veneer material.
