If the prospective planting site is an abandoned area, a lush growth of plants such as wingstem or boxelder would indicate favorable site conditions. Wild walnut trees on the area are also indications of a good Site, if and only if they are healthy and growing rapidly.
Walnuts require full sunlight and should be established in an open area. Prior to planting, sod and weed growth should be mowed down close.
A good way to start a walnut plantation is by planting the nuts. Gather the nuts in the fall. It’s not necessary to try to remove the husks.
Plant the nuts 3 or 4 inches deep, in late fall or early spring. You will want to have a spacing of 11 by 11 feet, but seeds may be planted closer in anticipation of rodent damage and insufficent germination.
