At a special unannounced meeting Friday morning, the Rappahannock supervisors agreed to begin the state mandated reassessment of property at 100 per cent fair market value this year instead of waiting for the 1981 deadline.
At the Friday morning session, supervisors E. P. Luke, Hubert Gilkey and Clarence Baldwin also decided to hire appraisers from the state department of taxation, estimated to cost a third of what a private assessing firm would charge.
Reportedly, the head of the property tax division from the department, Fred Forberg, insisted that he needed a decision on using state personnel before March 31 in order to schedule his staff. Forberg estimated earlier that the reassessment will take a year with a cost of $1,800 per month.
