Like good country stores everywhere, Barron’s was a center for the community. “In the winter, they’d come in here to play checkers almost everynight, to tell jokes and sit round the stove,” Theodore recalled. “The young ones don’t want to do that anymore. I don’t know if the young ones even know how to play checkers,” he smiled.
The checker games might be part of the past but Barron’s is still a hub of the Viewtown community. Strangers stop by to ask directions. United Parcel Service drops off hard-todeliver packages, sure that Theodore and Margaret will get them to their destination.
