On the left-hand pages, samples of cloth are provided for buyers to choose. Prices reflect the changing times. In 1922, tailored suits ordered through Barron’s Store sold for an average of about S30 with the most expensive style and fabric listed in the catalogue at only $52. “Fancy vests,” at $4.50 a piece, were an even better buy.
Ledgers dating back half a century show the impact that the passing years have had on food prices. In 1939, a one pound bag of coffee sold at Barron’s for 13 and a quarter cents. Coffee in the can was more expensive, going for 18 and a quarter cents. A pound of cocoa was only 18 cents.
According to Theodore’s records, the store paid wholesale prices in 1939 of $3.48 for 100 cans of sardines, $4.35 for 100 pounds of sugar, $3.73 for 48 cans of Campbell’s Soup and $1.59 for a dozen 12-ounce cans of corned beef.
