Every time you want your living room or other room a few degrees warmer, you turn the thermostat up. This turns the furnace on to heat the whole house until the thermostat is satisfied. It takes a lot of fuel to heat a whole house. . . but it takes only a small amount to raise the temperature a few degrees for a single room or zone.
