What we do with the land today, our children will live with tomorrow. To forget this is to deny the future.
Here in the Northern Piedmont of Virginia, in the 1960's alone, our nine counties lost over 2,250 farms. Today, this trend continues. We are not alone in this, but somehow, here in the Piedmont, there seems to be more to lose. Centuries of careful stewardship have produced a uniquely beautiful land that could be destroyed in one short generation. We have to accommodate the demands of the future but we must also protect what we have inherited from the past. This a large challenge, and there is only one way to meet it: for citizens to demand the wise use of our land. Then we—and our children —will have a Piedmont to be proud of.
