“We don’t know what we’re mandated to do,” Eldred responded. “Personally. I feel there’s great merit in trying to keep students in an educational atmosphere,” he said, adding, however, that he was very concerned about “entanglements of open-ended mandates."

Walter Masterson maintained that the school board has handled suspensions in an adequate manner by stipulating that suspended students won’t lose any grades already earned. Masterson said he too was "a little bit gun shy” about the lack of specifics in the state’s mandate for alternative education.
