The lag in the building industry has also had an impact on the number of food stamp applications. “Since last fall, we’ve had an unusually high number of unemployed construction workers’* and self-employed persons, like carpenters, with jobs in construction-related fields, said Moffett. More recently, lay-offs and reduced hours at Aileen, Rappahannock’s only industrial plant, have resulted in additional food stamp applications, she noted.
Moffett added that single parent families are in the minority among the 764 different households that have applied for food stamps since the program was first instituted in Rappahannock in June, 1974.
Volunteers Wanted
As part of its new program, the welfare office is looking for volunteers to do food stamp outreach. Moffett said the volunteers will be paid mileage and expenses for their outreach work but no salary. In addition to performing a service for the community, the volunteers can gain valuable experience that will help them in securing full-time paid employment later, she noted.
Besides volunteers, Moffett is looking for feedback from food stamp recipients or would-be recipients on problems and hindrances they’ve encountered in applying for and participating in the program. “We want to know the reasons why some people who qualify and who
