that time, naturally we were not at our best and brightest but it seemed a bit odd that, having landed from a New Y ork-London — Bombay flight, we were now on a Bombay-London-New York flight—only this one went via Delhi.
At Delhi airport the red carpet was out. We were greeted by smiling officials and pretty young women in resplendent saris, who hung garlands of flowers round our necks and adorned our foreheads with the little dabs of red paste which we came to recognize as the customary marks of welcome for honored guests. After minimal delay, we were put in a bus and driven to our splendid hot^l. the Ashoka. By that time, at least two of us had been on the road for something lil/e thirty hours. As we staggered out of the bus. we were dead on our feet, but we were at once revived by a fresh demonstration of hospitality. We werf showered with flower petals by ’ another bevy of beat^tieS and saluted with lndihn music by a trio of musicians perched on the back o^ an elephant. He (or stye) graciously accepted the
