They have nothing to do with panting pooches, but—since the time of the ancient Egyptians—have been associated with the appearance of Sirius, the brightest visible star in the sky, known as the dog star of* the constellation Canis Major, the Greater Dog. Which prompted the i Greek poet Hesiod to provide advice followed today by many a heat wave victim: "When Sirius parches head and knees, and the body is dried up by reason of the heat, then sit in the shade and drink."
