Travel Declined
Again In June
Although out-of-state passenger car travel increased slightly, overall travel on Virginia's major highways in June continued to show a decline, the Virginia highways and transportation department said recently.
Travel on Virginia’s interstate, arterial and primary highways decreased 1.8 percent compared to June 1979. Out-of-state passenger car travel increased by 0.7 percent, while Virginia passenger car travel was down 0.9 percent compared to the same month a year ago.
Commercial vehicle travel dropped 4.5 percent in June, according to J. P. Mills Jr., the department’s traffic and safety engineer.
The 1.8 percent decline in June travel compared to a 2 percent drop in June 1979, the first time travel had shown a decline on the state’s highways in that gasolineshort period.
The travel analysis was made from counts taken at 216 locations on the state’s interstate, arterial and primary roads. Mills said.
