Even so we hesitated. It would clearly be a strenuous trip and. even for hardened travelers, advancing years make suitcase-living less and less attractive. Aside from the Taj Mahal, what clinched the matter for us was that, for a trifling supplementary charge, we were allowed to stopover in Europe on the way back. In other words, a virtually free visit to my children and grandchildren in London and Paris, whom we had not seen for over two years. But that is another story. Up to the last minute, we were of two minds. We recalled all we had read and heard of the poverty and qualor of India, the harsh climate, the health hazards and. not least, the smells. In the last couple of weeks before our take-off, Virginia was persuaded to read E. M. Forster’s A Passage to India (one of my favorite novels) and V. S. Naipual's An Area of Darkness. She said that if she had read them earlier, nothing would have included
