An ancient tradition will be renewed Saturday on the grassy slopes of Leeds Ruritan Park at Hume as the Leeds Ruritan Club stages the 20th renewal of its jousting tournament.
It requires skillful horsemanship and a steady eye and hand to spear tiny rings suspended from a pole while riding at speed, and the best equestrians of the area will be vieing for the silver bowl the Ruritans award for first prize.
Last year the fatherdaughter combination of Melvin Poe, Knight of Orange County, and Bridgett Poe, Maiden of Orange County, swept the lists, and they're expected back this year.
An old-fashioned pitcooked barbecue will be served after the tournament and games will be played during the evening. The entire afternoon’s entertainment costs only $5 for adults, $2.50 for children under 12.
Tickets are available from any Leeds Ruritan member or at (he park. The fun starts at 3 ;p’clock. During the evening a beautiful fan pattern quilt made bv the Hume Home Demonstration Club will be awarded, as well as a door prize.
The tournament is the major fund-raising vehicle for this community oriented organization.
During the past year Leeds Ruritan purchased a whirlpool bath and presented it to a local family for use in therapy for a teenaged girl paralyzed as the result of an automobile accident.
