For example, electricity and telephones at the Hampton Roads BridgeTunnel complex on Interstate 64 will cost an estimated $30,000 a month, while the utility bill at the Big Walker Mountain and East River Mountain tunnels on Intersate 77 will run about $8,000 and $6,000 a month, respectively.

Electric power is needed for lighting and for the extensive ventilation equipment in the tunnels and for a sophisticated traffic control and television monitoring system at Hampton Roads.
