Tryouts for ‘‘H.M.S. Pinafore.” Gilbert and Sullivans rollicking operetta, will be held Monday. August 18, beginning at 7 p.m. in the Mountain Magic Theater on Gay Street in Washington.
In “H.M.S. Pinafore.” the English-speaking world’s most famous “words and music” team created a musical that doesn’t demand professional singers. Neither do prospective cast members have to be familiar with Gilbert and Sullivan’s works.
Women’s singing roles include the heroine, a soprano, and two other main parts, one a soprano and one an alto. A small chorus of "sisters, counsins and aunts” requires both ranges.
On the men’s side, some tenors, some baritones and a bass or two are needed for the characters of Sir Joseph Porker, K.C.B., Capt. Corcoran, able seamen Ralph Rackstraw and Dick Dead eye and boatswain’s mate Bill Bobstay.
