Moffett noted one major misconception regarding food stamps which she feels has kept a portion of Rappahannock’s elderly population from participating. “So many people believe that after a food stamp recipient’s death, the welfare department can recoup the value of any assistance given by attaching their estate—their house and lot—before it’s handed down to relatives. That’s totally untrue,” she emphasized, stressing that there is no requirement for paying back the value of food stamps.
Moffett encourages any county resident who feels they may be eligible for food stamps to call the welfare office for an appointment or drop by the Washington office to pickup the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s informational booklet on the program. For those who are interested but don’t want to take the step of coming to the welfare office, the booklets are also available at the Rappahannock County Library, she noted.
