Even then, our day was not ended. After a couple of hours rest, we rejoined our buses for transport to another hotel, the brand-new* and monumental Maurya Sheraton. We were touched to find our local elephant there to greet us. Inside, we were again received with garlands and guest-spots before marching out on to the lawn to meet the hotel management. On a small stage were musicians and our first snake-charmers. Then, a troupe of dancers, including a marvelously self-possessed young woman of six or seven, gave a display of regional dances. After that, drinks and buffet dinner on the

lawn. Finally, a charming and elegantly dressed young lady from the public-relations staff of the hotel insisted on showing Virginia and me over the whole establishment, from the lofty and unusual foyer in rough sandstone, through bars and restaurants to the splindid guestrooms — priced, we were not surprised to find, somewhat above our heads. In a renewed state of exhauation, we tottered to our bus and were driven home.

Undismayed, we realized the pace we should be expected to keep up for the next week.
