it down on top of a large metal dome, obviously heated from below. At right angles to the baking table was a far longer table laden with a bewildering variety of dishes. Smiling servers tried to tell us what was what, but as the names were strange to us. we had to shoot in the dark.

I have to confess that for me personally the Indian cusine has a limited appeal. For all my world-wandering, I remain incurably European in my eating habits, except for a deep devotion to Chinese food. I was therefore relieved to find that, perhaps as a minor legacy of the British Raj. all the luxury hotels we were housed in offered as an option a traditional English breakfast. So come what might for the rest of the day, I was in no danger of starving. On this first occasion I had no problems. Like my fellowtravelers, 1 helped myself unstintingly and enjoyed an excellent meal under one of the gaily-colored umbrellas on the lawn.
