Brucellosis is back and the news could be the death knell for many Virginia cattlemen.
“We’re not in as good shape on bang's disease as we thought we were,” Dr. Tom Bibb warned cattlemen at last week's annual beef cattle management school held at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria.
Six to eight years ago, the federal government advised farmers they no longer needed to vaccinate against brucellosis, more commonly termed bangs. “They thought we had it under control but they’ve learned their lesson. If . we’d kept up that program, we wouldn’t be in the damn mess we are today,” Bibb said.
"The damn mess” includes an outbreak of brucellosis that has affected more than 20 Virginia herds to date. Other southern states have been hit much harder.
