Asked for his advice. Bibb said he would vaccinate rather than test every heifer against brucellosis. “I think down the line, we’re going to see a requirement that all female calves be vaccinated even if they’re going to a feedlot.” he said.
But Bibb maintained that peer pressure from concerned cattlemen is the only way to control brucellosis in Virginia. For every positivereacting cow found by testing, probably a hundred more get away, he said, noting that there’s no way all the roads leading from producers to buyers and markets can be patrolled. Farmers who are testing their herds for brucellosis will have to pressure their neighbors to do likewise.
“No matter what the law and regulations require, the only people who are going to control brucellosis are you all,” Bibb told a silent room of cattle producers.
