Quail Call s Christmas trees are planted in rows ten feet apart, much more space than normally allowed. Keim gave the seedlings extra room partially so he could use large machinery for tree care but primarily so he could disc up the ground for wildlife planting. “I have over 90 bird food plots I put in for quail, deer and turkey,” the captain acknowledged. “I plant 13 wheat plots each year. During the winter, wild turkeys and quail raise their whole broods in there,” he continued. Lespedeza goes in every spring, along with autumn olive, bush honeysuckle and millet planted especially for doves. Trails wind into dells and along streams so Keim can take his 4-wheel drive jeep back to check on his more inaccessible wildlife food supplies..

Keim blends land use with land care. Like the Indians hundreds of years before him, he uses without abuse, leaving his 220 acres a more natural environment than he found the property 15 years ago.

It's ironic that Keim bought the Amissville farm for hunting. “I haven’t killed a quail on this farm in four years,” he said, adding that he liked watching the small birds more than shooting them, at least at Quail Call. Besides, he noted, winters have.been .hard oft quail'for the .past.i several years.
