Virginia highway facilities have won two of the seven first place awards for design excellence in nationwide competition conducted by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal High Administration (FHWA).
Interstate 77 in Carroll County was selected as the best new rural highway and the restored Meems Bottom covered bridge in Shenandoah County was cited as the best example of environmental preservation and enhancement.
The prize-winning facilities were planned and constructed under the direction of the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation, and were selected from among nominations submitted by 66 governmental agencies in 40 states and 26 localities throughout the country.
