After the January 1 deadline, veterinarians will no longer be able to buy strain 19 vaccine from suppliers. Bibb continued. All the new reduced dose vaccine will be shipped to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and then to six regional labs before dispersal to vets.
"Each dose will be measured by the state...We will be getting a good, tested product." said Bibb, adding that he wasn’t yet sure whether the vaccine would be sold or given to veterinarians.
With the reduced dose vaccine, it will be possible to vaccinate two to four month old heifers at weaning time against brucellosis. Bibb said. The new program also requires that calves be tattooed in the ear, showing a shield and the quarter of the year in which the inoculation was administered.
“It’s more trouble but the important thing is to get those calves vaccinated," Bibb said. “We’ve got brucellosis in Virginia now—probably more now than we did 20 years ago."
