The Ketms operate Rappahannock’s biggest Christmas tree farm but the business is secondary to Capt. Keim’s primary concern—creating a natural habitat for wildlife.

"We bought the farm in I960, thinking that when I retired, I could do a little hunting,” Keim recalled. Following the lead of neighbors who put their land to work, the Navy captain investigated ways of using his acres. The hills wouldn’t lend themselves easily to crops, he found, but the property could provide pasture. There was just one hang-up. "Raising horses and cattle is not compatible with bird life. Very little in the way of agriculture is,” he emphasized.
