From 1970-1980, Rappahannock’s population grew by 17.2 percent, the smallest hike in the planning district, while the total number of housing units in the county increased during the same period by 33.6 percent. Only Madison had a smaller increase in the number of housing units (33.2 percent) during the same ten years and all five counties reported a bigger population surge, ranging from 36.1 percent in Fauquier to 18.5 percent in Madison.
Rent, Value Low
According to the planning district commission’s summary, Rappahannock ranked fourth among the five counties in both median home value and median rent charged per month for leased housing in 1980. Median home value here was $39,100. That figure was topped by Fauquier ($66,800), Culpeper ($45,600) and Orange ($40,200). Median value was lower only in Madison ($37,500). Median rents were $198 in Fauquier, $159 in Culpeper, $150 in Orange, $122 in Rappahannock and $111 in Madison.
