Nelson Lane asked if the board would agree to include a $2,000 request instead of the $21,000. ‘This was the amount quoted just for a cost analysis,” he said. “We could start there.”
Eastham agreed, saying that the $2,000 limit would remove the temptation to the architect to design a more expensive building than necessary. “Then we could have a cost figure, which of course would not be publicly known,” he said. “This would satisfy the perception of those in the community who support a building program. ”
Eastham made a motion to include the $2,000 instead of the larger figure. No second was made.
“What about $10,000?” asked Lane.
“This is a meaningless amount,” responded Randall Updike. “It’s far short of what is needed to put us in a position to further proceed next year.”
Updike, along with other members of the board, struggled with a motion. Finally, he proposed that the board leave the $21,000 in the budget request, subject to the satisfactory completion of the previouslyagreed upon cost analysis, meetings with the supervisors, and more feedback from the community.
