child at home, in the emergency room, hospital, or wherever was inadequate (parents are plagued by feelings of doubt and guilt without any help from their family and friends).
From the women’s conversation, it’s evident that their friends were a source of great comfort and help. But it’s also evident that those left untouched by this overwhelming tragedy will never fully understand what’s happened to these families.
That’s where the Compassionate Friends comes in. Its members have not only seen the worst life has to offer and survived, they’ve experienced a drastic rearrangement of perspective and priorities that makes them unique. All of them at one time believed that the force of their love and tremendous will would be enough to keep their children alive. How could those children die, who were kept warm, safe, well-fed, who were loved?
“What you realize suddenly,” Sam said, “is that you just don’t have the control you once thought you had—over their life, the lives of your other children, your own life—over anything.”
