Spring arrived in the northern hemisphere at 5:25 a.m. EST on March 20—the moment when the sun crossed the earth’s equator marking the vernal equinox.
According to Dr. Paul H. Knappenberger, Jr., director of the Science Museum of Virginia, the sun is now moving northward, relative to Earth’s equator, at its maximum rate of speed. This motion, Knappenberger noted, will bring warmer temperatures to the northern hemisphere. For the next six months, the sun will also rise in the northeast and set in the northwest, producing longer hours of daylight than darkness.
The position in the sky where the sun now resides is also called the vernal equinox and is the fundamental reference point for determining celestial positions. The equivalent of this position is just off the coast of Ghana where both latitude and longitude are zero degrees.
Over 2,000 years ago, the vernal equinox point was located in the constellation Aries and used to establish the original “sun signs.” Since then, the sun has slowly drifted westward, about three-fourths of a constellation and is actually located in Pisces at the time of the equinox.
