Sodium In the Diet
Sodium is one of the most highly concentrated minerals in the body. It is found in the body skeleton, blood stream and around the outside and inside the cells.
Its chief function is to maintain normal water balance inside and outside cells. Sodium helps nutrients like glucose pass through the cell wall.
According to Anne Hertzler, Food k Nutrition specialist' at VPI, sodium should not be completely eliminated from the diet because it is an essential nutrient. Only under a doctor’s orders should salt be restricted. The doctor should recommend the amount of salt in relation to the patient’s medical problem.
