Art Teacher
Cecily Kohler told the board she was “unpleasantly surprised” when she moved to Rappahannock. The reason for her dismay was the lack of any art program in the elementary school.
Children are given mimeographed sheets with seasonal pictures which they color, a process Kohler contends is “more damaging than no art at all.”
Last year, RCES principal Maggie Piper had asked reinstatement of an art teaching position, according to Kohler, but it was not recommended this time and RCQE was suggesting it for next year.
Altogether the association endorsed two additional teaching positions at the elementary school. One person would teach art and assist the gifted and talented program. The other slot would combine two halfday positions in foreign language and computers.
