D.C. actress Diane Couves will perform “The Belle of Amherst” on Saturday, November 17 at the> Gay Street Theatre in Washington at 8p.m. This highly acclaimed one-woman play is based upon the poems and letters of Emily Dickenson, the 19th century writer whose extraordinary poetry and lively spirit flourished within a life of secluded spinsterhood.
“Squire Dickenson’s half-cracked daughter,” as Emily refers to herself in the play, epjoyed the responses of her scandalized neighbors to her single lifestyle, her white dresses worn yearround, and her bits of cryptic verse which she enclosed with Christmas baking “(That’ll keep them guessing,” she says with satisfaction as she dashes off an obscure couplet).
