Mrs. Semones has been involved in community activities most of her life. The former 4-H’er often scored well as a youngster in “health contests,” during which judges judged contestants on posture and other physical attributes. “I lost points for having hands that perspired,” she remembered, laughing.
At age 13, Mrs. Semones earned First Prize for a “plain shirt-waist dress” of cotton, which she made, then modeled in Richmond.
At 14, she was named “Most Outstanding Club Girl of Amherst County,” for which she won a trip to the University of Virginia.
Her most dubious honor., though, came when she was awarded “honorable mention” in a canning competition. She had taken green beans, measured and sliced each at one inch, then stacked them neatly in two-by-two rows. “It was beautiful, but

Her love of community organizations shch as 4H led her to become involved in Brownies and Girl Scouts when daughters Barbara and Vivian were growing up. Mrs. Semones said a family should have “sharing time,” time when the TV is left behind and the family enjoys doing things together. She recalled that the entire family got excited about major events in any family member’s life. One time, when daughter Barbara was crowned homecoming queen, Mr. Semones drove seven hours just to be there.
What ‘Homemaker’ Means
Mrs. Semones told what being a homemaker means to her. “It means having a good, Christian, attractive home, not necessarily filled with a lot of beautiful furnishings. Take what you have, keep it dean. Be proud of it.”
