The eustachian tube drains from the ear to the back of the throat and is responsible for equalizing the pressure behind the eardrum. The problem occurs because in children the muscles that control the eustachian tube are not developed fully and often because of that, fluid builds up behind the eardrum; the eardrum will not move and this results in stgnifleant hearing Ima Dr. Shaia mentioned that this can be corrected by,M... putting ‘tubes’ in the ears. This is a fairly short procedure. It lasts about five minutes.” He added, “It is very important in language and speech development; because if they are allowed to go a significant length of time with a hearing handicap, studies have shown that children who have fluid behind the eardrum or who have frequent infections, do poorly in speech and language development.”
He explained that the situation is reversible and if the tubes are put in the child’s ears to get rid of the fluid, "hearing will return to normal and they won’t have serious problems which could develop by doing nothing.”
Hearing loss does not seem to be related to any particular ethnic group or culture or any particular region of the country except in some rural areas where adequate medical care or treatment for infections are not available.
