Post decided this year to drop the free publicity the newspaper previously had given similar events in its weekend section.

Last Chance To Help

Mr. Strange announced he’d need Borne help with “different jobs” on the day of the run. Like a kid with a Christmas wish list,.he called for volunteers and outlined needs in a variety of areas. Each required widespread, and occasionally dubious, expertise. Among them:

• Starters and registrars.

• Pick-up truck complete with owner-driver of said vehicle.

• Timer, back-up timer, timer for mile six. (When no one readily volunteered to be timer for mile six, Randy Norman, seated in the back, was volunteered by someone else seated in the front. “Go ahead,” young Norman sighed, as though he already knew his name was being written down.)

• Water-table helpers. (Peggy Woodward volunteered her daughter to help, then volunteered the services of the whole family.)

• Ambulance service. (Would one be enough? The group decided it would.)

• Juice, cider, donations of apples.

• Kitchen, kitchen help, contribu^ tors of baked goods. (Are hamburgers and hot dogs okay again this year? How about some hot chocolate for the runners? Some refused the cider last year....)

• Turkeys. “We need three turkeys and somebody to pick them Up,” Mr. Strange announced. (Three high-school students in the back of the room started pointing at each other, saying, “He’s a turkey.” “No, she’s a turkey.”)

• Gun shooter. “Ray, you’ll start the race?” Mr. Strange asked Ray Cannon to do the job for the second year in a row. “Don’t forget the gun,” Mr. Strange added with a smile that slowly stretched. “And don’t put live ammunition in this year like you did last year,”

• Cwmmrlust nodded; the coHunitmentwas solidified.
