Detecting hearing problems early in children is serious business whan one thinks that an entire lifetime of successful communication depends on those first precious years when a child is forming sounds and repeating the syllables he hears. His speech patterns are beginning to take shape. If there is little or no hearing and no other way is introduced to him to break out of his world devoid of sound, he becomes lost. Sometimes what society labels a slow learner, or a child who has learning disabilities is really a child who cannot hear what is going on around him.
Which children are likely to have hearing problems? Will my child be hearing impaired? According to Dr. Fred T. Shaia, neuro-otologist at the Balance and Ear Center, Inc. in Richmond, these are questions which need to be asked long before a pregnancy occurs. “Parents who have a strong family history of hearing loss should consider genetic counseling before pregnancy,” Dr. Shaia said in a recent interview.
