majority vote of state cattle producers in a referendum held by VDACS. In March of this year the Board of Agriculture and Consumer Services had accepted a petition from the cattle industry to hold such a referendum this year.
A favorable vote in the referendum means that the Virginia Cattle Industry Commission will be established upon proclamation by the Governor. The law provides the commission shall indude 16 members appointed by the Governor representing the various segments of the cattle industry. Its role will be to develop and implement a self-help program of research, education, and promotion for improving the cattle industry.
Passage of the referendum also means that cattle producers will begin assessing themselves 25 cents per head on all cattle sold, except for dairy cows returning to the farm for milk production and those animals selling for less than twenty dollars a head.
It is estimated that about $155,000 will be generated from this assessment each year. These funds will be used for projects that will benefit Virginia’s cattle industry.
