Rabid Cow, Skunk Found In Fauquier
Two cases of rabies were confirmed recently in Fauquier County and control of the disease continues to be the local health department’s “number one priority.”
Six dogs and one cat were destroyed after their owner believed they had come in contact with a rabid skunk that wandered onto a farm near Warrenton Oct. 30.
A few weeks earlier, a Bealeton calf was sent to the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center because owners suspected it had a tumor. Testing of the brain revealed rabies.
Horses and cows are susceptible to the disease which strikes the central nervous system but these large animals rarely bite humans, according to a doctor at the New Bolton Center.
Fauquier Deer Herd Large, Healthy
Fauquier County game wardens predict local hunters will find a plentiful supply of large, well-fed animals when deer season opens Monday.
A bountiful crop of wild nuts and fruits accounts for the healthy herd and Fauquier animals are “better off” than deer in other parts of the state, said Bob Duncan, assistant chief of the game division of the Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries.
Game officials expect local hunters to kill 1,700 to 1,800 deer during the seven-week season, which ends Jan. 5. Fauquier hunters killed 1,383 deer last year.
Mmdcrer Sentenced To SO Years
John C. Marteny, the Falls Church man convicted of murdering two Vienna women last April, has been sentenced to 60 years in prison.
Fairfax County Circuit Court Judge Lewie Griffith sentenced Marteny Friday to a 20-year term and a 40year term, to run consecutively. That’s 10 years less than what a jury recommended Marteny serve after it found him guilty Sept. 26.
