Actually it became both for 20 industrial arts students at Rappahannock High who recently completed downscaled working replicas of historic ““chines, then visited the National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. to see the real McCoys.
The dual lesson learned by eighth and ninth-grade students was taught by Ron Vickers, an industrial arts teacher in his first year at the high school.
About a month ago, Mr. Vickers assigned the project. A few students worked individually, but most in pain. Each team or individual selected the historic machine they wanted to create; each also had to master the art of downsizing from formulas found in a textbook-type manual.
