RICHMOND — Attorney General Gerald L. Baliles will lead a historic Democratic ticket that includes a black and a woman against the Republicans in the 1985 general election.
While some Democrats still fear their team of candidates might be too controversial to succeed in November, one former Republican statewide officeholder grudgingly conceded, “It has pizazz.”
“I accept your nomination to continue Democratic progress for the people of Virginia,” Mr. Baliles, 44, told some 4,000 cheering Democrats Saturday at the Richmond Coliseum.
In the Nov. 5 general election, he will face Republican Wyatt Durrette, the man he defeated in the 1981 race for attorney general.
Mr. Baliles’ route to the nomination was cleared after Lt. Gov. Richard J. Davis withdrew from their bitterly fought race in late April.
