Joining Mr. Baliles on the ticket are state Sen. L. Douglas Wilder, 54, of Richmond, the candidate for lieutenant governor, and Del. Mary Sue Terry, 37, of Patrick County, nominated for attorney general.
Mr. Wilder’s nomination marks the first time since Reconstruction that a major party in Virginia has offered a black for statewide office. Miss Terry is the first woman to bid for the office of attorney general.
Gov. Charles S. Robb said in his keynote remarks that the Republican ticket pales by comparison to the Democratic nominees.
“Our candidates have a clear edge in leadership and experience,” he said.
Gov. Robb warned that the Republicans will spend huge sums of money to flood Virginia with intimidating emotional appeals.
