ing down the aisle at invitation time, plus dressing a certain way, plus having certain friends, and so forth. This is an easy error to fall into. It is so much easier for us humans if we have these outward indicators that we can count or evaluate. Yet they are contrary to the gospel. The Holy Spirit wrote the epistle to the Galatians through the apostle Paul in order to combat this error. He declares this addition of works to be a perversion of the gospel, and states that those who proclaim it are false brethren. He further points out that the people who are deluded into believing this false gospel not only do not gain anything from it in addition to what they gained from the true gospel, but rather they lose both the liberty and the practical righteousness which the true gospel would have provided for them. (See Galatians 1:6-7; 2:4, and 5.1-12.)
Please do not misunderstand. I am not saying that salvation carries no responsibilities with it. Indeed it does carry very great responsibilities. The liberty we have in Christ is not liberty to do whatever we want, or even to believe whatever we want; but it is freedom from working to get salvation or to keep salvation (or even to help get salvation or help keep salvation), a job at which we could never succeed anyway. And in the security of this freedom we can serve God in a way never imagined by those who are in the bondage of supposed salvation by works or by faith plus works.
