Mr. Baliles said in his acceptance speech that Mr. Durrette lacks the experience to offer leadership.
While his GOP opponent calls himself a conservative, Mr. Baliles said, “There is nothing conservative about untested leadership or on-the-job training for an unproven governor.”
Referring to Mr. Durrette’s selection by the state Republican convention in Norfolk June 1, Mr. Baliles said, “Never have delegates representing so narrow a spectrum nominated someone so lacking in breadth of experience.”
He contrasted his own 18 years of government service, both as a legislator and state official, with Durrette’s six years in the House of Delegates ending in 1978, his last public office.
“There is a difference between running for office and running the government. There is a difference between talking about change and making it happen,” Mr. Baliles said.
