Massie that almost every child could be nominated and included in the program, which made filling out the questionnaires on the children difficult. She suggested that teachers should be given the forms to fill out on the children at the end of the school year instead of the beginning.
Massie agreed with that suggestion. Oliver asked Rowe to have a list of how many students were nominated and how many accepted into the program by the next meeting. Rowe said that all of the information should be ready by the July meeting.
The board also gave Rowe permission to send in the application for Chapter I federal funds.
Other Business
In other business, the board received information on changes in the evaluation procedures for certified personnel. There are some new state mandates that the system will have to follow, and State Department of Education personnel will be making evaluations of new teachers.
The local evaluations involve two classroom visitations for tenured teachers and at least three for probationary teachers. An end of the year report is also filled out on each teacher. “The local evaluation is used more for contract purposes while the state evaluation will be for certificate purposes,” Estabrook said. The teachers will be evaluated by the state for two years before they can receive their certificate.
“Some say evaluations are to help the teachers improve, and others say that they are jilst to gather data to make contract decisions,” Estabrook said. “I think we have to use the same data in two ways.” The board will consider the information and approve or disapprove changes in the evaluation
form at the next meeting.
