Among the goals he outlined for his administration are higher teacher pay, completion of the Metrorail transit system in Northern Virginia, a new secretariat for economic development, tougher law enforcement and more support for equal rights and human rights.
“I intend to be the governor of all Virginians,” Mr. Balilessaid.
He made it plain he will respond forcefully to anyone who attempts to avoid the issues and attacks the Democratic ticket on the basis of race or gender.
“With Thomas Jefferson we will stand and we will say that all of us are created equal,” Mr. Baliles said.
Mr. Wilder, whose Republican opponent is state Sen. John Chichester of Stafford County, noted in his acceptance remarks his climb from a disadvantaged childhood to chairman of three major Senate committees.
He pointed out that a poll ranked him as the fifth most effective senator and said, “This does not happen unless he is prepared to work hard, learn the rules and climb the ladder rung by rung.”
Miss Terry stressed her experience as a former prosecutor and longtime service on the House Courts of Justice Committee.
“If you’re looking for someone to enforce the laws of this state with firmness and fairness, look to the Democrats,” she said.
Her Republican opponent is Del. W.R. “Buster” O’Brien of Virginia Beach.
Mr. Baliles said he would announce within the next 10 days his plans to resign as attorney general to devote full time to campaigning.
